Plastic Electrical Junction Box

wall switch: no neutral wire in old style junction box?

Just replaced a light switch in the wall in a 35 y/o house. I saw just two wires coming through the junction box, both are black, one of the two had electrical tape wrapped around it. There is no ground screw on the box, and box appeared to be plastic. The new switch has three wires – two black & one ground (green). So to wire the switch I went black-black x 2 and just capped the green. Was that right?
Thanks!

Yes you were right. The reason there were only two black wires in the box (one was white with black electrical tape wrapped around it) is that this is a switch leg. The switch is still breaking the hot, it is just doing it at a different location. In the light box there will be a two conductor cable coming in that the black is hot. The white from this cable will be hooked up to the lamp holder and the black wire (hot) will be tied to the white wire (with black electrical tape wrapped around it) in the other two conductor cable that goes to your switch box. Last the black wire in the cable going to the switch will go on the other side of the lamp holder.
