Conduit Electrical Wiring
If my electrical panel has no ground wires on the ground bar is it a grounded box. All metal conduit is used. ?
I was told that if no ground wires are present and the two (neutral and ground) bars are attached by a bar then the box is grounded. All metal conduit is supplied throughout the series with the exeption of about 2ft flexible conduit to each fixture. Also, apparently the ground wires in the fixtures are not needed. Is this true?
WOW this is a big question,
1 is this a main pnl or a sub pnl
2 is the ground bar grounded, there must be some sort of grounding means, most of the time it goes to a ground rod , a water pipe or building steel, and better combinations of these
3 if pipe is run steel emt or rigid is used then you technically dont need a ground unless your a hospital or other special case
4 the fixture whips should have a ground in them, I belive per the NEC that if they are over 6 ft it is required. Flex is not a good ground if you are real concerned about saftey then you should run a ground wire from the fixture whip to the box it comes out of.
Per the code EVERY Peice of metal in an electrical system that isn’t current carrying MUST be adaquitly bonded.
flex is often not considered an adequit bonding means, because it could burn off before the breaker trips, and the connecting means isn’t as solid as that of pipe is.
Personally as and electircian if I owned the building i wouldn’t worry about it, pipe is a great ground better that 12awg cu even, flex while not considered safe by code as a bonding means is just fine as far as I’m concerned.
And as for the bar crossing the neutral to the ground, this persons understanding isn’t technically true
What that strap does is BOND the Neutral to ground so that the neutral can get to ground, Inside not just at the pole, It is an additional saftey item, In sub pnls this is not present because you never want the Neutral and Ground running in Parllel beyond the main
