A Brief Guide to Connector
There are different types of connectors available such as plugs and socket connectors, terminal blocks, component and device connectors and crimp-on terminal connectors. Plug and socket connectors include a male plug and a female socket. Male connectors plugs into receptacles, jacks and outlets, while female connectors contain sockets to receive other devices.
Also called as terminal boards or strips, Terminal blocks also provide a means of connecting individual electrical wires. Although they are considered one of the most flexible connectors, they have their own share of disadvantages. It is difficult to connect wires than plugging a cable. Secondly, terminals are generally not very well protected from contact with external conducting materials or humans.
Fast-on or quick-disconnected terminals are also commonly used as components and device connectors apart from individual screw terminals. Crimp-on terminals are known as lugs. Lugs are joined to wires to be connected with screw terminals. They are used for connecting two wires permanently.
These days, computers also utilize many types of electrical connectors. They are used to fit ribbon cables, coaxial cables, batteries and power supplies. The sizes of electrical connectors vary from connector t o connector. From a standard 16 contact connector to 24 contact micro –miniature connectors, they come in different sizes. For places with a high humidity level, water proof electrical connectors are also available. Depending on the functionality and durability, the prices of connectors may vary from one to another.
Apart from the types of connectors mentioned above, there are other types of connectors as well such as the automotive connectors and Circular connectors. Let us briefly explain these types of connectors and their usage.
Automotive connectors are electrical connectors used for automobile systems like ignition, sensor feedback and control, safety and power systems. These connectors have become essential for cars to connect switches, wires, lights, electric motors, sensors, computers and plugs. Automotive connectors also contain an automotive connector housing for mounting multiple wires and conductive terminals. A single Automotive Connectors can connect 100 wires and more.
Circular connectors are circular in shape and are used basically for external interfacing. A connector comes with pins or with sockets. Every household is equipped with a number of connectors. Connectors are used for connecting and disconnecting electrical power connections.
