Real Dangers To Watch Out For

The Texas Roofing Contractors Association of Texas has put out a number of press releases warning the community about potential dangers associated with roofing. If you need repairs done, and are considering doing them by yourself, take a look at this list to make sure you avoid potential hazards. Even if you hire a contractor, you should always follow up on their work to make sure they did it correctly – you can never be too careful when it comes to you and and your family’s safety.

Concerning Vents for Carbon Monoxide Gas

If you own a gas furnace, water heater, or other vented gas applicance, you will want to hire a contracter to fix your roof – don’t try to do it by yourself. Any re-roofing process will unavailably move things around and, invariably, pipes will become misaligned. Monoxide fumes can end up being vented right back inside your house. This is a serious threat; carbon monoxide gas is oderless, and very hard to detect. Prolonged exposure to it can be fatal. Even if you hire a contractor for the repairs and they reconnect pipes, RCAT recommends that you have the HVAC professional come and inspect your home’s gas vents and pipes after any roof work is done.

Repairs After a Hurricane Hits

The Texas Department of Insurance requires that all repairs done to roofs and houses after a storm meet the requirements of the Texas Windstorm Building Code in order to maintain insurance coverage from the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association.  After large storms, numerous repair crews from Texas and nearby states come looking for work – and not all of them know about the requirements of TWBC. The homeowner needs to insist that certain materials and proceedures are used. Also, it is very important to have a “TWIA windstorm inspector or an individual appointed by the Commissioner of Insurance as a qualified inspector” inspect the construction as it is happening to ensure that everything is done properly.

Dangers About Lines Being Puntured

The International Residential Code requires that any service lines (like plumbing, electrical, or water) need to be installed where they are not likely to be punctured by nails. Unfortunately, this does not always happen. Contractors sometimes “nest” wires where they are out of the way, between the roof’s decking and rafters. When having repairs done on your roof, remember that workers might not be able to see these wires if they are nailing through plywood or other thick materials. If you think your wires have been installed incorrectly, have a licenced professional come and take a look before attempting any repairs.
