STEERING ENGINEERING
STEERING ENGINEERING COURSE
After two years of concentrated, concerned study of Intermediate examination, students get admissions to various engineering colleges, depending on their qualifying marks and ranks. The colleges may be of their choice or beyond the expectations! It doesn’t mean that the missed target cannot be carried in mind to come across such again.
Having taken the admission, one has to continue steering engineering course to achieve his /her future targets like IES/CIVIL SERVICES/CAT/GATE/GRE and other competitive tests. Aiming for those from the day one will be useful than thinking of the lost rank, branch and college.
Knowledge is universal!
Colleges provide only subject and degree. Apart from this, the requirements are basic and good communications skills, analytical capability, thorough and complete knowledge of your engineering subjects.
Any technology is a combination of the topics that you learn during your engineering course. Hence one should systematically know every thing of your subject and something of other subjects. Spreading your roots as deep as possible and achieving required targets, like a fruit yielding tree, shall be your sole aim.
To master B Tech you have to orient yourself to study engineering.
Orientation:
What ever is the Engineering/Technological feature and topic, preparation is required in the similar lines.
The parts of the machine shall be noted. The machines have several components and parts.
As an example, consider a machine like an aircraft. It is one of the machines having multiple engineering topics and components. The topics for the aircraft, a wonderful engineering are:
- AIRCONDITIONING
- PRESSURISATION
- VENTILATION
- COMMUNICATIONS
- FLIGHT CONTROLS
- ELECTRICAL
- FLIGHT & NAVIGATION INSTRUMENTS
- ENGINES / POWER PLANT
- FLIGHT MANAGEMENT & GUIDANCE SYSTEM
- HYDRAULICS
- LANDING GEAR
- INDICATING & RECORDING SYSTEM
- LIGHTS
- MAINTENANCE
- FIRE PROTECTION
- FUEL
- ICE & RAIN PROTECTION
- OXYGEN
- WATER & WASTE
- DOORS
All related and relevant subject knowledge can fully be acquired during the degree itself.
Approach:
For all the machinery, two types of study is required.
1) Exterior study: Name of the peripherals appearing on the machine and exact location of those shall be understood and memorized.
2) Internal study: hidden components, their input and outputs, internal processing and use of the component shall be thoroughly reviewed, understood and memorized.
3) Interaction: controlling the component, checking the indications, knowing its failure and taking required action shall also be at your finger tips.
4) Practicality: Perfect and appropriate knowledge of using engineering tools is also essential.
Negligence of maintenance, lack of awareness and carelessness will lead to disasters! Preventive care knowledge is always important along with after damage care knowledge!
Interference:
If the machine is taken care, it can move heavens.
Heavy machine like latest aircraft A 380, with 238.67 ft (72.75 m) as length, height 79ft (24.08m) and take off weight 5,60,000 kgs moves in air carrying and caring almost 550 passengers.
In an aircraft, irrespective of its huge structure and size, one should know that its multi dimensional movement is totally by its internal machines.
Its engines produce forward movement of the aircraft
Wings produce lift i.e. without which aircraft can not leave the aircraft
It has ailerons on the wing, which are used for banking or rolling the aircraft
the elevator in the tail portion is used for climb or descent of the aircraft
the vertical rudder in the tail portion is used for directional control
Diagrammatic approach: you will come across varieties of diagrams and circuits
1) Schematic diagrams
2) line diagrams
3) circuits and network diagrams
You must know what is what, how is the inter connection among the components.
For every component one should know what its input/output and the process in between.
Studying these, understanding and practicing these in B Tech will provide a way to master the course.
Correlation:
During second year B Tech, control systems is a subject in which fundamental concept is explained by a basic diagram. It is not an exaggeration that the same diagram and concept are used in the design of latest machines,
It is no wonder that if you show full interest on your subjects, during B Tech you will be best fit for any job in the world with minimum guidance and training. Ignoring this, you are certifying yourself as a permanent student of B tech only.
Work area:
The engineering jobs are divided into:
a) On field: that is with the machines and its peripherals. One has to work in actual weather conditions
b) control room : sitting in air-conditioned cabins, one has to control, monitor the operation and take remedial steps for anticipated failures
c) Research and Design: one has to study the diagrams, circuits, features and work on improving these.
d) Teaching: Very important career, wherein one has to prove commitments in imparting best knowledge.
Stress on:
- Wherever and whatever it is, during B Tech, you have to explore the studies to equip with the latest knowledge on the current and future technology in various corners of the world. You must thoroughly know of a) controls and selections b) computations c) mechanical forces d) electrical controls e) logics f) valves g) actuators h) fluid flow i) instruments and their role.
Additionally you also be sure of the purpose and operation of schematic diagrams, lay out diagrams, logic diagrams, flow charts, valves whether shuttle type, modulating type or selection oriented, breakers, contactors and relays.
Epilogue:
From experienced faculty, environment, library, valuable books and classmates get the best!!
Goal for continued updating of knowledge, success to fulfill your and your elders wishes. In the run, keep checking to match your targets with your preparations.
Say no to ragging:
Instead of having sadistic pleasure of torturing the fresh minds realize that you have a better role.
Student minds are of these types:-
a) a student after listening will stop by saying it is like this
b) another will say, oh its like that, then what next
c) Some will think, if it is like this then what changes can be inscribed to improve it. In this case you are like a designer. Think beyond to design that way.
d) Undesired and unfortunate category of students: totally blank in the class, think of materialistic pleasures and dream during the classes.
Your role is to improve the intellectual powers for the students of category (d) by organizing lectures on academic awareness and self confidence.
Be a team to bring name and fame to the institute, parents and your four years of study.
