Metal Electrical Box Extender
Electrical: How to splice a motion detector wire from exterior plug?
I have an exterior plug that is flush with the house siding, about two feet up from the ground. I want to install a motion detector on the corner of the house about 4 feet away and about 8 feet off the ground.
I have metal sheathed wiring and need to know how to properly:
1. Splice a permanent wire onto the socket while keeping the plugs available. I’m thinking there should be a weatherproof box extender available so the metal sheathed wire can pop out the bottom while still leaving the plug on the front?
2. Add a weatherproof 4″ round box to the wall for the motion detector light. It’s under the roof overhang so shouldn’t need to be too water-tight, but is there a correct way to do it with an external wire (ie. not embedded in the wall)?
Thanks!
Install a weather proof box extender at the receptacle outlet box. Use cable or wire rated and approved for a wet location such as type UF, or THWN in PVC conduit. A weather proof fixture box. Conduit clamps as required. Anything outside, including the inside of conduit, is considered a wet location in the electric code. Email if you need more help.
